Week 8

HIII!
This week has been fab, like always. nothing really new.
Actually I lie, One of our investigators who was really progressing told us he was done with "anything church related"... uh... ok... SO FRUSTRATING! THIS IS SALVATION PEOPLE! ugh, The Lord will take care of it in His own time though. We just  have to be patient.
We still have a few investigators who are really progressing and getting super close to baptism! We have a baptism Aug. 27 for cute little Keenen. That'll be awesome! I don't remember if I have told you guys about keenen but he is 9 and is the smartest kid I have ever met. He memorizes all the lessons we give him and he has read 50 chapters from he Book of Mormon stories in 7 days... He's awesome!
We have had a really good and busy week! It has gone by waaaay to fast.

Sister Weymouth and Holmgren redid our mission motto and it's actually very accurate.

Before:
We are grateful to be in the Hawaii Honolulu mission - The Aloha mission,
The Atonement of Jesus Christ is our message,
Love of God and others is our motivation,
and obedience to the commandments and mission rules is out strength.
By sharing the gospel with others, we can give them the "Ha", The breath of life, Even eternal life. Aloha!

After:
We are grateful to be in the Hawaii Honolulu mission- The spoiled mission.
The amount of food is our pleasure,
Love of rice and ice cream is our motivation,
and obedience to eating everything on our plate is our strength. By eating the local food we put on the pounds, Even 40 pounds. Aloha!

lol there's that. hahaha Well I love you all so much!! I'm doing great and still loving it here.
I hope you have a good week! :)
Sister Sperry

1. Here is an painfully awkward picture of me with a lizard but I had to send it because I am proud. These guys are hard to catch!

 2. Sister Weymouth and I. You can't really tell but we did our hair to look like sister wives. LOL

Week 7

This week was a really good week!
I have another dog story for you guys... So we went to visit tim and he has a fence and a pitbull. The last time we went over and we got lucky enough to catch him outside he let us in the fence and his dog was being way chill and nice. So when we went this week we thought the dog would remember us and be nice... When we went in the fence we didn't see the dog so we just went and knocked on the door then a few seconds later... death. The dog came running from the back yard growling and barking and freaking out then we see a lady come running after the dog and she grabbed the dog and was yelling at us to hurry and get out. the dog was seriously about to kill us hahah it was terrifying! She had the dog pinned and he wanted to get us so bad. So today, I am a survivor! haaha lucky me.

On a more spiritual note, We met with a guy named Holo this week. I think I might have mentioned him in my latter last week. He was a referral from his wife... But last week we taught the restoration and this guy is seriously so smart! When we challenged him to read the book of mormon he came back with so many questions and all these things he was studying. It was so great. But, He didn't understand why we would need the Book of Mormon if we had the Bible so we ready 2Nephi 29 with him and he just chuckled and said " that was me! ". It was so cool! He is starting to understand why we need to BOM.  Then on sunday he came to church with his family!! WOHOO! In the gospel principles class there was a guy in the ward who came in and bore his testimony and it was very powerful and Holo seemed to really appreciate it. I look forward to meeting with them again this week!

I hope you are all having so much fun at the family reunion!!! I LOVE YOU ALL!!!
 Aloha,
Sister Sperry

Week 6

As per usual, there just isn't a lot of detail! I send questions with hope that we will get some sort of response . . . and this is what we get! It's a good thing we love her so much! :)

ALOHA!
I've been out 2 months already! I can't believe it! Time goes by way too fast. This week was great. We got a self referral from a less active member. She wants her husband to learn about the church but she warned us to come prepared because he is "hard headed". So we were a little nervous but he was awesome! We taught the restoration and he just soaked it up! He said he would read the Book of Mormon and pray to know if it's true. I'm pumped to see how this week goes with him! WOOHOO!
Mom had some questions for me:
1. Crazy food experiences this week?
I tried spam for the first time this week! that's all. Nothing too crazy.

2. What's it like having a companion?
Really good! She is a great missionary!

3. Transfers . . . when do those happen? Has it ALREADY been 6 weeks???
YA WHAT THE HECK?!?! This transfer is actually a 7 week transfer but I'll probably stay in Aiea because I'm training. I don't ever want to leave this area though.

4. PDay ... do you guys ever do anything fun . . . like explore the island?
Nah, we aren't aloud to leave the area... We are going lazer tagging today though! That'll be fun!

5. When do you have zone conferences and what are they like?
Every  month. We just talk about our numbers and set goals then the Zone leader does a training. nothing too exciting. Very important though!

6. How is the new mission president? I imagine that's a crazy transition for them. :)
They are so cute!! I love them already. They are rockin it.

7. Investigators . . . How's Tim? Any others ... Give us some names and we'll pray for them all.
We didn't get to see Tim this week because he had to go somewhere for work :( LAME. We will go this week though! Keep praying for Shayna and her family. THANK YOU!!

8. How are the Tovey's and Ericksons? Will you please tell them ALOHA from us!
Good!! They still rock! I will!!!

9. Do you still love the mish?
   Yeeeaaaaaahhh!

10. How about the dogs? Are they still making you crazy?
    Obnoxious creatures....

I love you all!!!! Have a good week!

  Sister Sperry

July 4th email (Week 5)

Email sent July 4th
another great week!
We got to meet our new mission president and his wife! I love them already! They will be great. I'm excited to get to know them better.
This week we got to teach a guy named Tim. We tracted into him on finding fasting friday. When you think of a Hawaiian person, That's him. Just so relaxed and chill vibes. He has a gate and a dog and we aren't allowed to go into gates when they are closed and plus, he had a big dog so we wouldn't have gone in anyways... But Sister Weymouth and I really felt like we needed to visit him this week. We pulled up hoping he would be outside but nope... We just kinda hang out for a minute. Were yelling aloha hoping someone inside would hear us but still nothing. We didn't want to leave! We really felt strongly that we needed to visit him so we were kind of disappointed and very slowly walked back to the car. When we got to the car, a car pulls up infront of his house and it was Tim!!! YAY!!! We ran back and he invited us in and we got to share the resto with him. The spirit was so strong and he wants us to come back to teach his family! WOHOO!! He has been prepared by the Lord to hear the message. I'm excited to go back and teach them!

Ohana <3
First things first. Mom, Dad .... I'm sorry I'm so bad at emailing. It just stresses me out way too much! :) I am having some really cool experiences. I just don't have time to type it all out.... I love hearing all about what's going on at home! It makes me so happy. You all seem to be just as cool as you were when I left. I'm proud.
This week we had fasting finding friday. I thought I was going to die but was so worth it! FFF is exactly what it sounds like. The entire mission fasts and finds all day. Sister Weymouth and I went and tracted in 3 different neighborhoods and we found one person in each which is a miracle! These people are so ready for this gospel! WOOHOO!!! The first person we talked to was a girl named Lei. We were going to go tract an apartment building and she was outside smoking so we went and talked to her. We talked about religion and she said she doesn't really have one right now but she would like to find one! Woohoo! We shared a thought with her and told her a little bit aobut the church and she LOVED it! I'm stoked to talk with her again!
Later we met a man named Tim. He is your typical Hawaiian. Just so relaxed and wants the world to chill..... I'm all like . . . . same! Anywho, we told him about our church and he seemed really intersted. He has 3 daughters and he's excited to share what he learned with them! He really wants us to come back! YAY! He even asked if he could come to church with us. Unfortunately, when we told him the time, 2:30, he said his daughters had softball games at that time. DUMB! But that's alright because softball isn't forever! LOL
Then we met a lady named Mary. She is a dry Mormon . . . we just need to help her understand that. LOL It was a great day though! We were weak, hot, and hungry all day but it was SO worth it.
On Saturday we had dinner with the Tovey's and Erickson's and they surprised me with that stupid princess picture! It was so funny. You guys got me good!!! I was dying!
We had stake conf. on Saturday and Sunday and it was great. Probably the best choir I have ever heard. Samoans can SING! Also, on FFF, we knocked on a Jehovah's Witness door and that was so scary. She was attacking us verbally and it was scary! Now that I look back at it, it was just extremely awkward, and now I think it's funny.... but that was interesting.
The work is so good here. A lot of people are progressing. I love it! I love the people here! I love my mission! I love you!!! My missionary friends are coming to hang out so . . . STAY COOL!
Aloha!

OHANA!
Aloha! This week has been 10/10! No lie! Actually every week is because missions rule! On Tuesday we did some service at Sister Fujinara's house. Yard work. So many bug bites but it was way fun! We had some of the other missionaries come help because there was some heavy lifting and we didn't know how to use a weed wacker.... #girlswillbegirls. But I love going over there. She is amazing!!! She's the lady who dumped all her alcohol out. Her son lives with her with his pregnant girlfriend and 2 kids. Sister Fujihara didn't want to come back to church until her son did but she realized she had to do it first and her son is starting to notice and is starting to be more interested. YAY!!!
We saw Shayna this week, too! I don't remember if I told you guys about her but she rocks! She has 4 of her own kids but takes everyone in! She has a huge heart. They have a lot going on right now in her family.... it's so sad but she is very interested in the church. She works on Sundays but she is quitting her job at the end of July so she can come to church! WHAT!!! Freaking Awesome!!! She says if it's a good church for her family then she wants to be baptized. SWEEEEEET. I know it's the right church for her and her family so we are just praying she will know it too.
We met Pres. and Sis. Bekker yesterday! It was great! I love them already! Yes, I miss the Warners but I know the Bekkers are called by God so I'm really excited to get to know them better. They came around to each district and they just got to know us and we got to know them and the told us their main rules. It's the same as the Warners. There are 3! 1. Don't lie to the president 2. lock your hearts 3. Don't do anything stupid! DUH to all of those but some people are stupid so it needs to be repeated a million times. Anywho, they are awesome!
I'm sorry I stink at email. I just get stressed out LOL but hopefully this will help you know what's going on with me.
I love my mission. I can't believe I've already been out almost 2 months.... Crazy!!! The people here are so good! the dogs . . . . not so much but the people make up for it. :)
I love and miss you all so much!!! You don't even know!! We really do have the best family in the world! Stay cool.
Aloha,
Sister Sperry

Hawaii Week 4

1. Seeeeters
2. Anyone who has been to my house knows how much I hate this stupid picture. Well the ward mission leader surprised me with it hahahahah
(This is a picture that Jenny got in Young Women's a few years ago. We've used this picture over the years to torture her a bit. . . so when the Hawaiians came to visit, they took it back with them to display. They went the second mile by enlarging it to an 8x10 photo. I LOVE THEM!)

2. With Sister Horne havine a good time hanging out in the bathroom with that huge cockroach at zone meeting.
3. One of the recent RMs from the ward came out with us and I love her! She actually served her mission with Reuben!!! small world.
4. This is Zanae. She got baptized last year and so we go and visit her and teache her mom but they are moving to Washington this week! so sad! I'm going to miss her!
 5. Some of my favorite kids! We go and teach Tina ( the older girl) and all the kids love to come and listen. They are so fun!
6. More good times.
7. Check out this cool rainbow.

Hey sorry, but I don't have time to send out a group email this week but I'll do better next week!
I love you all!!!

Hawaii Week 2

Aloha!!!
This week has been good. Interesting, but good.
So kinda funny story, We had dinner with one of our investigators on Tuesday. They wanted to take us out because they don't clean. I don't think their house has been cleaned in 40 years. I'm not kidding when I say that. It's so sad but so annoying and they won't let us help them clean. Anywho, that's not the point of the story. So we meet at their house and Kay ( the wife) is in the drive way pacing. So we get out of the car to ask what was wrong and her 125 pound, american bull dog had died like, 20 minutes before we came. So sad. But they are way old and couldn't carry so they went and got a neighbor and tried to carry it out of their back yard to the drive way so the crematory could come pick it up. All these old men couldn't handle this huge dog so Sister Weymouth is a boss and jumps in there and  helps carry this huge dog to the front yard. Obviously I'm in the corner freaking out and trying not to cry hahah but that was something interesting that happened this week. They still came to dinner and acted like they were totally fine. They are very interesting people. I love them though. They didn't have any kids but they always say if they knew they would have kids like us they would have! they are so sweet and funny.
Guess who came to speak to us missionaries?!? Elder Renlund! I just heard him speak in the MTC a few weeks ago and I got to hear him speak again this week! He wanted to meet all of us missionaries and it was amazing to shake his hand and get to talk with him for a second. We are basically best friends now. Just sayin. Also, It was so good to see all of the missionaries! This might sound bad but I really miss talking with people my age. I got to see my district from the MTC who I miss so much! It's fun to get to talk to everyone again and see how they are doing. Plus, We get to make new friends! yay!
We have seen so many miracles this week! We teach one lady who hasn't been to church in over 40 years! She has been coming the last few weeks and I guess that was a battle to get her to start coming but she mentioned to us that she wants to make it back to the temple! So cool. She has a lot of problems and addictions and we talked to her about the word of wisdom this week and when she came to church on Sunday she told us that she dumped all of her alcohol out and is getting a priesthood blessing to help her get through this. LIKE WHAT!? I did not expect that! It's so amazing to see her make the changes in her life that are necessary to make it back to the temple.
So we had a rough day on Thursday, It really turned around that evening. We went to visit one of our investigators names Shayna. She is a young mom who works a lot, so she is super busy but she is so sweet! I love her, but we knew she had a smoking and drinking problem so we knew we needed to teach her about the word of wisdom. Scary, but needs to be done. So, guided by the spirit, we brought up the commandments, chastity, and the word of wisdom. The spirit was so strong and she understood and agrees with everything we taught! miracle!! She agreed to try to stop smoking and drinking. Amazing. Then, we got her to pray. Wow. that was something else. It was the first time she had prayed out loud and the spirit was so strong! She was crying and Sister Weymouth and I were both tearing up too. So at the end of the day, It was well worth pushing through
We have seen so many people progress this week. I am so lucky to be able to be apart of this work. I feel so blessed. I know that none of this could be done without Christ and His Atonement.
BTW I found out that if you want to send me any packages that it's best to do the Flat rate thing. I guess it's the same price for any weight! so instead of paying $60.00 it's only $18.00 or something like that.
Ok so I'm so afraid of all the freaking dogs here. They all bark at us and try to get us and I get so scared and my companion always tells me I need to relax but I CAN'T!!! and the other day we were going to visit and investigator and her stupid dog starts barking at us so I get nervous and then it charges!! So I take off but it caught up and bit me. It wasn't hard but it gave me more of a reason to be scared! hahah well I love all of you!!
Stay cool.
Aloha,
Sister Sperry

pic 1: We went bowling!! wohoo.
pic 2: a horrible pic of my MTC district that's in Hawaii

pic 5: Prissy, Falley, Grandmas Hatch and Sperry

Mom note: This week we had a few couples from her ward in Aiea come to Utah and visit us! We spent an afternoon getting to know them and we know that Jenny is in amazing hands. The Toveys are the ward mission leaders and the Eriksons were the ward mission leaders before that. A quick back story . . . several years ago in Young Women's, they took individual pictures of the young women in princess crowns. They then framed these pictures and gave them to the girls. This picture finds itself in random places through out the house. If a date came to the house to pick Jenny up, the picture was prominently displayed on our piano. She didn't love this, but we found it hilarious! This has gone on for years. So we told the Toveys and the Eriksons this story during their visit and they agreed to take the photo home. Brother Erickson had the idea to enlarge it and we received a text today saying that the picture is prominently displayed in their homes. They both have the missionaries over weekly, so we are so excited to hear how it goes! :) I added a few pics of our afternoon with them. I love them and so grateful for them and their love for the missionaries. We feel so extremely blessed that Jenny is being watched out for. :)

Hawaii Week 1

Aloha!!  ( I can say than now cause I'm in Hawaii)
My first week has been great! I love it here! I don't have a lot of time but my mom sent me some questions so I'll just reply to those! LOL

1. Who is your new companion? My companion is Sister Weymouth. I don't know her first name... Sorry Mom. She graduated from Westlake  but she moved around a lot. She is awesome though! She has only been out 4 months and is already training! so clearly, she is an awesome missionary! She's cool! She is very obedient so that's good! She is organized and a genius when it comes to the Book of Mormon. I am learning a lot from her!

2. What was the first night like? It was awesome... Really busy though. A lot of training and all that fun stuff. Jet lag is real though. It hit at 6:00 and I thought I was going to die. I was so tired haha I'm such a baby but I need my sleep!! I'm okay now tho so don't worry. lol

3. Mission president and wife? They rock. They take really good care of us!

4. Where in the world are you? Hawaii.  LOL on Oahu tho.

5.  First area? I am in Aiea! West Honolulu. It is a beautiful area and the ward here is awesome!!

6. What ward are you assigned to? Aeia ward... The best ward

7. Your first experience door knocking? Were you shaking in your boots? kinda. My comp showed me how it was done so I was pretty chill.

8. What was your first door knock like? they slammed it on our face lol

9. Are you getting to know any of the ward members yet? Yes I am! but it's so hard to remember their names because they are CRAZY!!! I feel bad that I can't remember them but they need to not be so hard... ya feel?

10. Any embarrassing or funny moments? living... we had to eat crab the other night and I don't know how to eat it OBVIOUSLY cause it's nasty...  but I was trying to crack it open and I cut myself on it and I felt like the biggest idiot.

11. Do you have any investigators that you visit regularly? Yeah! we have a few investigators who are amazing!!! I'm really hopeful that they will get baptized. Sister Weymouth is feeling bad for me cause I'm so pumped and I think everyone will come to church and get baptized but they never do!! So lame.

12. What's the food like? nasty... I really have a hard time with it. we have to eat all this raw fish. I don;t know what it's called and I don't even care. I just know I always say a silent prayer that I won't gag haha. I feel so bad because I know people are feeding us their best and so I try to like it but there are some things that just don't sit well with me. A lot of rice!!! HELLO 40 POUNDS!! :((

13. Have you put on the first ten pounds yet? 😄 Not yet! We get up at 6:00 to work out and we also live on the 11th floor and we take the stairs.... I die every time but it's worth it! Sister Weymouth HATES the weight gain too so we do what we can to keep as much as possible off.

14. What kinds of things do you plan on doing on your p-days? IDK yet. we are going bowling with the district today. So that'll be fun!!!

15. Do you ever see the elders? nah. Maybe today tho? idk I haven't been to any meetings or service yet tho so I'm sure I will eventually.

16. What's your favorite part about being a missionary? Everything!!! I've never been happier. I love when we are in a lesson and you can tell that the investigator is feeling the spirit. It's awesome. They just need to act on it and that's the hard part.

17. What's your address? 98-402 koauka Lp. #1104 Aiea, HI 96701 If you send a package, send pictures! I always wish I had pictures to show my companion. Also, work out videos would be really nice. We have a gym in our apartment complex but its so nasty and small. We go but it would be nice to do some work outs in the pad.

There is a lot to adjust to here but it's so good. I love being a missionary.
Oh, something pretty chill, There are a million lizards and it's scary but cool. There are so many animals here!!!! The dogs are so scary and I get so nervous hahah everyone has at least 10000 animals. It's crazy. Also, I'm learning pidgin so that's fun! It's hard to understand people here unless you know a little bit of it hahah
I love you all! I pray for you all everyday.
Love,
Sister Sperry

Hawaii, Here I Come!

On Monday, May 30th, we got to speak to Jenny for a few minutes at the airport! She sounded happier than ever and is so excited to finally be able to serve the people of Hawaii. She made a goal to talk to someone on her way to the airport (frontrunner) and she DID IT! She met a nice Tongan man who had just moved here from California. He was baptized along time ago but is currently inactive. She bore her testimony to him and encouraged him to come back! Already a missionary!  The next day we received this letter from the Mission Office.

May 31, 2016

Dear Brother and Sister Sperry:

We’re pleased to have Sister Sperry serving in the Hawaii Honolulu Mission. Included are several photos of her with President and Sister Warner and the group that arrived with her.
We have found that weekly encouragement from home helps missionaries remain happy and also inspires greater missionary effort. Mail should be sent to:
Missionary Name (First, Middle Initial, and Last)
Hawaii Honolulu Mission
1500 S. Beretania Street, Suite 416
Honolulu, HI 96826

Please be aware that first class and priority mail can be forwarded from the mission office to missionaries without cost. Other services (FedEx, UPS, DHL) do charge to forward mail, which we collect from the missionary.

May the Lord’s blessings be with you and your family as Sister Sperry serves the people here in Hawaii.

Warmest regards,

Sister Tufts
Hawaii Honolulu Mission Secretary

Week 3

Week 2 from MTC:

HIII!!

So, I just want to make it known that I am 4 square queen!! I kick trash every day.
On a more serious note, Elder Renlund came for the Tuesday devotional!! IT WAS SWEET!!!  I wish I could put in words how incredible it was. I was feelin chill because we sing in the choir so we were on the same program as an apostle!!
The elders in our district are little girls haha it's so funny. They complain more and have so much more drama then the sisters... It's hilarious. The other day our teacher asked how we were and all the elders just start complaining about how tired they were and then you just hear Elder Lepule yell "I'M DEAD!!" hahah I've been laughing about it all day everyday. I really do love my district though. They kind of just turn into family. I'm going to miss them when we all head out on Monday
I really am loving being a missionary. I never know how to put it in words, but it's incredible. This past week I have really learned how to rely on Christ. I can't be a good missionary unless I put all of my trust in Him.
I love this gospel, I love being a missionary. Thanks for all the support. I love you all!!
Love,
Sister Sperry

Alrighty . . . this week is a jumbled mess of e-mails. She promised to be a little more organized next week. :)  I'm just going to copy and paste the big ones.

Hey! So, if I could write everyday I would have SO MUCH to talk about. But by the end of the day I don't remember a lot. So I'm sorry. To sum it up its kinda goes like this: eat, class, eat, class, eat, class repeated everyday. You all know or have heard how the MTC is... All of the days just blend together. It's exhausting but i have learned so much and I have grown closer to our Savior. I'm so grateful for everything I have learned. It's sometimes scary and stresses me out but its worth it. I didn't realize how much I didn't know until I got here. So good thing the MTC is a thing. I'm so excited for my siblings, cousins, and friends who are planning on serving a mission to experience this. It's so amazing. The spirit here is amazing.
My comp is Sister Nellis. She is so sweet. We get along really well and we haven't had any problems at all. Our only problem is that we kind of struggle teaching and that's really hard sometimes. but we are learning and growing together. The other set of Sisters is Sister Horne and Sister Hope. we are squad with them. All of us get along really well. We have some good times!!  I LOVE THEM!!!! The Elders in out district are also really amazing. I have learned so much from them and they are always so nice and patient. Our district is seriously the best! Super spiritual but and really fun! It's crazy because I feel like I have known them my entire life.
Mom asked me some questions. she asked,
Hows the food? I'd say questionable...
I know there was a list of them and I was planning of answering all of them but I left the letter in my class room and the only question I remembered was the food one... so I'll bring the letter in next week and remember to respond. I don't really know what to write and what everyone wants to hear so ask me questions if you have them! I love you all so much!!! I can feel the love and prayers. and I need them so thank you .
Also, I would love getting some letter during the week so if anyone has some free time, feel free to dearelder me. I think you just go to dearelder.com.Sister Jennifer Alyse Sperry
